HOCl frequently asked questions (FAQs)
How Does Re:juve Hypochlorous Acid Spray Work?
The very small concentrate of the naturally occurring Hypochlorous Acid suspended in water has the ability to attach its self to the cell walls of bacteria and then punch through using the power of oxygen when the solution oxidises. The acid molecule then neutralises the DNA within killing the virus or cell nucleus of the bacteria cell. All without any harmful effects to humans, animals or the environment compared to many traditional disinfectants and sanitisers.

Can Re:juve HOCL be used on skin? Will Hypochlorous acid damage my skin?
The key ingredient in SpraySafe Re:juve is HOCl, which is actually produced by our immune system, active in our white blood cells to protect against germs and heal wounds or cuts.
One of the key advantages of HOCl is its gentle soothing and calming properties. It helps alleviate redness, itching, and inflammation associated with skin conditions like acne, rosacea, dermatitis, and sunburns.
It achieves this by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulating the immune response, leading to a healthier and more balanced complexion.
How should I use Re:juve in my daily skincare routine?
For best results first wash and dry your skin in the area you want to treat. Then apply Re:juve and allow it to dry naturally; it will take about 15 seconds for the Hypochlorous Acid to do its job. Then you can apply any other treatments you want.
Where Hypochlorous Acid Water can help in your routine;
- Daily Prep – calm skin and prep it for additional products, morning & night.
- Post-Workout or On-the-Go Refresh – refresh the skin and prevent breakouts.
- Soothing and Reducing Redness – HOCl is naturally anti-inflammatory.
- Specialist Treatment – gently disinfect and support healing.
Just a note – if the Hypochlorous Acid has not completely oxidised (dryed) and you apply a lotion with Aluminium as an ingredient there may be a colour change reaction.
What is the shelf-life of Re:juve?
Unopened bottles
Each SpraySafe Re:juve bottle displays a maximum effectiveness date on the label. For best results, we recommend opening the bottle by this date. When stored as directed (below 25°C and away from direct sunlight), the product maintains maximum effectiveness until that date and should be used within 3 months of opening.
After opening
Once opened, SpraySafe should be used within 3 months to ensure optimal effectiveness. Opening the bottle exposes the solution to air and environmental conditions, which can gradually reduce the stability of hypochlorous acid (HOCl), regardless of the printed date.
Why storage and timing matter
Hypochlorous acid is a naturally occurring, highly effective molecule, but it is sensitive to heat, air, and UV exposure. Over time, particularly at temperatures above 25°C, the solution gradually neutralises as pH levels stabilise, reducing effectiveness.
SpraySafe is manufactured in small batches in New Zealand and shipped to Australia to minimise storage time prior to use and maintain product quality, without relying on increased concentrations or harsh stabilisers to compensate for degradation.
To maximise shelf life, we recommend opening only one bottle at a time and storing unopened refill bottles in a cool, dark place. Refrigeration above 0°C is ideal.
What is the PH of Re:juve Hypochlorous Acid skin spray?
SpraySafe Re:juve has a pH level between 5.0–6.5, making it a very weak acid.
Effectively pH neutral, however the pH in the HOCI formula is maintained to maximize its antimicrobial properties.
- SpraySafe Hypochlorous Acid Water: pH 5.0–6.5
- Skin: pH 5.2–5.7
- NZ Drinking Water Standard: pH 7.0–8.5
- Typical Swimming Pool pH: 7.2–7.8
What is PPM?
PPM stands for “Parts Per Million” and is a unit used to measure the concentration of a substance in a solution. In HOCl water, it quantifies the amount of chlorine-based active ingredients relative to the total volume.
Hypochlorous Acid Water is effective from a very low parts per million concentration, 10-30ppm. The product does not require high PPM.
Products that do are not producing a stable solution. A stable solution requires precise chemistry & technology. Stability is affected overtime & through changes in temperature (travel). Therefore a local product is beneficial.
PPM is just one piece of the puzzle in creating a safe, effective HOCl solution. In reality, it’s the interplay between PPM, pH, chlorine levels, and stability that ensures your skin gets the very best.
Is there anything I cant spray SpraySafe Re:juve onto?
Do not spray SpraySafe Re:juve onto;
- Aluminium surfaces as the acid can dull the surface and the HOCl may cause it to discolour.
- Do not spray SpraySafe Re:juve on electronics of any kind.
What happens if I get Re:juve in my eye?
Be sensible with any pressurised product near your eyes. Spraysafe Re:juve is safe for your skin, eyes and open wounds but is not meant for direct eye contact. It will not sting anymore than spraying water into your eyes but we do not recommend it.
- Everyday Medical Use: Dentists use HOCl as a mouthwash.
- Doctors apply it to clean wounds.
- Used safely around the eyes to prevent infection.
Can I drink SpraySafe Re:juve?
SpraySafe Re:juve is not intended for ingestion as the weak acid will kill the good bacteria in your stomach. It is however commonly used as a dental mouthwash so is safe for oral rinsing.
Everyday Medical Use:
- Dentists use HOCl as a mouthwash.
- Doctors apply it to clean wounds.
- Used safely around the eyes to prevent infection.
One of your warnings says ‘do not transfer contents’, but how does the refill work then?
Good question, the idea is to refill your spray bottles + 30ml travel bottle! We do not recommend putting into any different containers as it may affect the potency and shelf life. Our bottles are designed to keep out UV and limit exposure to air as these expedite the degradation of the formula, affecting its stability and making it less effective.
One of your warnings says ‘may tarnish aluminium products’, what does this mean?
Acid can dull aluminum. Any products that have aluminum in their composition, the HOCl may cause it to discolour- there is no other reaction.
Note: Some make up products have aluminum powder in the ingredients.
